Geology/Soil The Papakura Stream through the Middle and Lower Catchments forms a natural divide between the steeper terrain (underlain by sloping Waitemata soils) to the north and the near flat ground (underlain by peaty, Pleistocene deposits) to the south.

The Papakura Stream itself lies within the Waitemata group soils where exposed sandstone beds can be seen in the stream.

The Papakura Stream catchment originates in an upthrown block of very well indurated sandstone and mudstone. The stream then flows through the Waiheke Group on the downthrown side of the WAikopua Fault and on to the aggraded alluvial plain of Papakura - Takanini.

To the north of Papakura Stream is Waitemata formation sandstone.

The Papakura Stream is located at the boundary of Waitemata Group and alluvium. The alluvium comprises light grey to red brown, soft to very stiff clays, silts and sands.

Alluvium is covered by peat in the southern part of the Lower and Middle catchments.

Land Use Primarily rural. The lower catchment from the outlet to Porchester Road is developed. Much of the area is residential. However, industries have been established particularly around the Lower Holmes Road area, between the railway line and the Great South Road and on the left bank between Porchester Road and the motorway.

The Papakura Catchment currently lies in the local territories of the Manukau City and Papakura District. The Boundary between these Local Authorities follows the Papakura Stream from the Outlet to Porchester Road, then north along Porchester Road, east along Ranfurly Road and south along Aflriston Ardmore Road.

The main stream can be divided into three zones on the basis of Local Authority boundaries:

Zone 1 From the outlet at Manukau Harbour to Porchester Road where the left bank lies in Papakura District and the right bank lies in Manukau City.
Zone 2 From Porchester Road to Alfriston / Ardmore Road (Muirs Bridge) the main channel lies in Papkura District and
Zone 3 From Alfriston / Ardomore Road (Muirs Bridge) upstream to the top of the catchment the main channel lies in Manukau City.
Water Quality Quality of stormwater in the Papakura stream not analysed for this study. Specific pollutants or potential pollutants in the catchment have been identified.
