Otara Lake Improvement Project
Strategic Review Produced by Worley, Sept 2000
In 1994 the Otara Lake Accord was signed between the former ECNZ, Manukau City Council, Auckland Regional Council and members of the the community. This accord confirmed an express commitment to enhancing the Otara Lake environment through water quality, water access and amenity improvements.
What are the Accord Goals
- Goal 1 - Integrated Management of land and water with regard to Otara Lake and its margines
- Goal 2 - Improve water quality to contact recreation standard by the Year 2000
- Goal 3 - Greater use of the lake and margins and improved relationship between Ngati Otara Park and the Lake.
It is clear from extensive community consultation process that an additional goal is sought by the community, that is, for Otara Lake to becomea focus for multi-cultural activities.
Key to achieving improved use of the lake and its surrounds is water quality. Without this, use of the lake will always be limited. As part of the Strategic Review, investigation has occurred into:
- Sources of water pollution
- Immediatewater quality improvements
- medium to long term implementation programme for continued improvement to water quality
