Otara Creek Catchment
Ngati Otara Park
(from Otara Creek Catchment Comprehensive Catchment Study
and Management Plan Options - Report Prepared by GHD Limited,
March 2001)

Worley’s Strategic Review of the Otara Lake Improvement Project (September 2000) reviews the 1994 Otara Lake Accord’s goals and objectives and provides an updated strategy on the way forward in improving water quality and enhancing the Otara Lake environment.
The proposed physical works treatment range from providing
a boat ramp at Ngati Otara Park, to dredging, litter traps,
gross pollutant removal and construction of water quality
treatment ponds.
Each of these works is to be consulted on, assessed for cost,
resource consents secured where appropriate and construction
undertaken. A timetable for implementing these works will
see them occur over the next 1-3 financial years.
The Strategic Review recommends effective policies to include:
- Ongoing community liaison
- Consultation with affected parties and agencies
- Review of catchment management standards
- Stringent engineering standards
The review also recommends monitoring to ensure we learn about the benefits derived from the improvement works and thus enable the use of monitoring data to guide future capital investment decisions.
Otara Lake Dredging
Meritec has completed a draft study analysing dredging and
disposal options for the dredging of the Otara Lake. Copies
of their executive summary and recommendations are included
in Appendix E. Meritec recommends a complete bathymetric survey,
fresh sampling, detailed testing of sediment and pilot trials
to confirm the results of their desktop study. Meritec also
recommends that a contractor and works methodology should
be selected prior to applying for resource consents. The Otara
Lake Dredging project will be subject to funding and no specific
timeframe has been allocated to the physical works.

Realising the “VISION” for Otara Lake
must be community driven taking into account costs and MCC
requirements.
