Manukau is the third largest out of 73 districts in New Zealand with a population of 328,968 at the 2006 census. This is an increase of 45,768 people, or 16.2 per cent, since the 2001 census and the city is growing by 9,150 people every year.
Manukau city has 8.2 per cent of New Zealand's population.

The city is one of the most culturally diverse areas in New Zealand, with over 165 ethnic groups.
- 142,683 or 46 per cent of Manukau residents identify their ethnic grouping as European (this includes New Zealanders)
- 15 per cent as Māori
- 28 per cent as Pacific
- 22 per cent as Asian.
39 per cent of Manukau residents speak two or more languages, with Samoan being the most widely spoken language after English.
47,346 Māori usually live in Manukau, an increase of 3,072 people, or 6.9 per cent, since the 2001 Census. The Māori population usually living in Manukau ranks first in size out of the 73 districts in New Zealand at 8.4 per cent of New Zealand's Māori population.
