History of the centre
The facility is located on reserve land at Dalgety Drive, Manurewa. The original courts were opened in 1973. Council funding was provided in 1987 to assist with the development of an indoor centre.
The centre is extremely well used by Netball Manurewa and other sporting codes, as well as a range of community groups, however over the years the building has deteriorated.
Redevelopment
The council is undertaking a feasibility study to identify the needs of present and future users of the centre. The study will include developing strategic and business plans.
Once competed concept designs for the refurbishment of the centre will be developed.
The guiding principles of the redevelopment project include:
- Developing strong community partnerships
- Increasing participation in recreation and sport
- Increasing community pride
- Increasing social connectedness
- Decreasing crime
- Increasing sports performance
- Increasing numbers performing at a higher level in sport.
