Aspirations for Hayman Park
The face of Manukau City Centre is set to change. The introduction of a rail connection, university campus development and planned city growth will see the centre of Manukau City undergo major redevelopment.
Manukau City Council recognises the value and importance in creating a vibrant city centre where people can live, work and play. The redevelopment of Hayman Park will need to address this change, and provides an opportunity for the park to become a defining asset for the city centre; one that is informed by its regional, local and urban context, and which establishes a strong identity through its design and use.
The competition process
Three selected contestants were engaged in a competition process to present cohesive design opportunities for Hayman Park that express what an urban park located in the Manukau CBD could, and should, be.
As part of the process, contestants were asked to submit 5 x A1 panels outlining their proposal for Hayman Park, and these were judged by an independent panel including landscape and urban design experts, an artist, and a community representative.
For judging purposes, the three teams were given ‘code names’ to be assessed independently. The three teams that took part were:
- Matauranga ‘Plotting Change’; Wraight Athfield Landscape Architecture
- Tutukitanga ‘Hayman Park re-creation’; Chow Hill
- Whakatau Tika ‘Pacific Clearings’; Isthmus Group Ltd
The winning design
The winner of the Hayman Park Design Competition is Matauranga ‘Plotting Change’ by Wraight Athfield, where the judges commented,
"This scheme was chosen for a range of reasons, including the attention to the relationship between Hayman Park and the immediate surroundings, the water quality aspects, and careful consideration of planting. The panel felt this scheme most sensitively dealt with the connections to the new transit station and MIT campus, as well as the street connections to the east."
