Point View Reserve is a 29.1 hectare natural heritage reserve, occupying the highest point on the ridgeline that defines Manukau City’s urban/rural limits. The panoramic views are a must to see from this vantage point.
The reserve was purchased by Manukau City Council in 1975. It is comprised of vegetation types including pockets of podocarp-broadleaf forest, kanuka forest, secondary scrub and gorse shrublands and approximately 25 per cent of the reserve is mown grassland. A stream at the bottom of the gully is a tributary of Mangemangeroa Creek.
Long-tailed bats (Chalinolobus tuberculatus) have been observed in the reserve. They are New Zealand’s smallest bat weighing 8-11grams, with a wing span of approx 25cms and have a homing range of 100 square kilometres.
The main entrance and carpark is off Caldwells Road. From the car park there are views across parts of the city. A second vehicle entry point, not available for public use, is off Gracechurch Drive and allows vehicle access to the Watercare reservoir. The East Tamaki Reservoir was built in 1994 to serve the suburbs of Howick and Pakuranga. It can hold 49,000,000 litres of water and is one of around 150 reservoirs owned by
Watercare Services Limited.
A number of tracks allow pedestrian access to parts of the reserve. A large part of this track system is through native bush. Parts of the tracks are steep with many steps. However ,both the trig and the highest point on the reserve are within a short walking distance of the car park.
