Walkway
Pigeon Mountain, situated in Half Moon Bay, was once called Ohuia Rangi.
This 'castle and moat' volcano overlooks the Tamaki Estuary. Pigeon Mountain has a great vantage point - from the top you can see the Waitemata Harbour, the Tamaki River and the Manukau Harbour.
The mountain is an old pa site. About 250 years ago this maunga (mountain) was a 'community of people'. It was a place where food was gathered from the Tamaki River where natural springs ran. Kai (food) such as kumara was grown and gathered to feed the local Ngai Tai tribe.
The mountain was originally three times its present size but its two craters have been quarried away to provide scoria.
Wetlands are being developed on the park, and there are a number of boardwalks and pathways to stroll around the site.
