Musick Point is located beyond Bucklands Beach on the promontory at the end of the Tamaki River.
The peninsula was known as Te Naupata and it bore a fortified pa by the name of Te Waiarohia. It was a Maori stronghold until 1821, when the Ngapuhi tribe from the North descended upon the district and decimated the local population. Both Ngati Paoa and Waiohua claim ancient occupation rights, as well as Ngai Tai.
Musick Point Esplanade Reserve surrounds the Musick Point Aeradio Station, which was opened in 1942. The radio station is named after pioneer aviator, Captain Edwin C Musick.
Musick Point Esplanade Reserve is an 8.7 hectare natural heritage reserve of high priority. It encompasses a narrow band of steep coastal cliffs dominated by mature pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa). The point provides spectacular views from some of the best preserved pohutukawa cliffs remaining in Auckland (subject to Treaty Settlement Claim).
Musick Point is now owned by the Crown. Telecom maintains a leasehold interest in the Radio Station and the area around it, and Manukau Parks administers the Esplanade Reserve.
