Manukau Parks supports friends groups at a number of our reserves. The groups are made up of local volunteers and are involved in the protection and future development of our reserves.

Whitford Estuaries Conservation Society (WECS)

Volunteers assist with the restoration of the area around the three creek ecosystem at Whitford.

Work days focus on:

  • Weedbusting
  • Native planting
  • Pest control
  • Dotterel protection.

Friends of Mangemangeroa

Address: 108 Somerville Rd, Howick

Friends welcome volunteers to help with eco-sourcing, native plant propagation and planting as part of restoration work on Mangemangeroa Reserve. Two local Rotary Clubs and the Royal Forest and Bird Society are also involved in this restoration work.

There is also opportunity for:

  • Animal and plant pest control
  • Track work
  • Monitoring
  • Newsletter production
  • Guided walks.

Schools assist with planting and pricking out. This reserve is a valued resource available to schools for educational activities.

Restoration planting occurs from May - September.

Friends of Totara Park

Address: 90R Wairere Rd, Manurewa

The friends are busy keeping an eye on Totara Park and help with basic maintenance such as painting, weed control and now have a propagation unit to grow native seedlings to be planted back into the park. There is also an education room available on-site.

Te Ara o Puhinui

Address: Aerovista Place, Manurewa

Volunteers are appreciated to help restore the Puhinui Stream as it winds its way from the headwaters in Totara Park, through Manukau city centre and out to the Manukau Harbour.

Corporate support is currently helping construct tracks and paths, after individual volunteers have already built bridges and other tracks. We still require volunteers to assist with:

  • Planting trees
  • Controlling weeds
  • Collecting rubbish.

Musick Point Trust

Auckland Regional Council

  • Hunua Ranges pest control projects - contact Mags Ramsey on mags.ramsey@arc.govt.nz or phone: 09 536 7012.
  • Kokako Project: putting out bait and clearing bait lines on the North side of the Hunua Ranges. Volunteer days are every Tuesday and the 2nd Saturday and the 4th Sunday of the month. It's a full day off track in the bush so you need to be fit, have tramping boots and bush tramping experience for this project.
  • Hunua Falls: a new project to enhance the wildlife in the area around the popular Hunua Falls. Similar work to the kokako project but ideal for those with limited time or leg power as it will only take 2-3 hours. Every Wednesday morning from 9am.
