Concessions

If you want to run a commercial activity on one of Manukau's parks you will need to apply for a concession.

What is a concession?

A concession is official authorisation to operate on a park(s) by Manukau City Council. Authorisation is required for any commercial activity taking place within a park boundary. Examples of a concession include:

  • Hire services
  • Food and drink vending
  • Instruction activities
  • Commercial education.

Why do I need to apply for a concession?

Our primary aim is to protect our:

  • Beaches
  • Native forest
  • Wildlife habitats
  • Open space resources in Manukau.

A concession ensures that commercial activities don't spoil these areas and that the provided services / facilities are appropriate for the requested site.

A concession gives you a legal right to carry out your proposed activity in Manukau park(s).  It also sets out tje guidelines for operation to ensure a secure relationship between both Manukau Parks and the concessionaire.

Concessionaires are required to pay concession fees for the privilege of obtaining commercial or other benefits from public land. These fees will be the result of negotiations and may be charged as either a:

  • Percentage of the gross revenue
  • Per hectare
  • Per head
  • Per trip charge
  • A fixed fee
  • Or a combination of these depending on the activity.

Sometimes concessions are publicly tendered although most are initiated by the individual or firm approaching Manukau Parks seeking permission to run a particular business.
