Health-promoting schools.

Purpose

The purpose of Health-Promoting Schools is:

  • To enhance educational outcomes
  • To facilitate action for health by building health knowledge and skills in the cognitive, social and behavioural domains.

(International Union for Health Promotion and Education, 2008)

“Health Promoting Schools are schools which display, in everything they say and do, support and commitment to enhancing the emotional, social, physical and moral wellbeing of their school community.” (World Health Organisation)

Auckland Council supports a group of Manurewa schools ‘the Manurewa Cluster’ to work as Health-Promoting Schools (HPS).

The Health-Promoting Schools initiative supports schools to develop a sustainable framework for schools to identify and address school needs. HPS also links with the New Zealand Curriculum and supports a number of the National Education Goals (NEGs) and The National Administration Guidelines (NAGs).

Background

Exercise.

Health-Promoting Schools is an international initiative and has been in New Zealand since 1996. HPS is based on international research and best practise.

In Aotearoa, Health-Promoting Schools is based on the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, Te Whare Tapa Wha model for hauora and the Ottawa Charter for health promotion.

It is an effective way to improve the learning outcomes and health and wellbeing of all students in the school setting, through a whole school approach. HPS focuses on schools as an integral part of the wider community and offers practical ways for children, young people, teachers, parents and community members to contribute to schools and the wider community, being healthy settings.

The Manurewa Clusters' Commitment to Health-Promoting Schools

On the 30 July 2010, principals from the Manurewa Cluster signed an HPS charter, to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to HPS and the charter vision;

We, the Manurewa Cluster of Health-Promoting Schools, are committed to promoting school social and physical environments that improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people, thereby contributing to enhanced engagement and learning.

The charter document was developed by schools, in conjunction with council. Schools proudly display the charter in the school foyers and reception areas.
