The Clendon CAYAD project is a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Manukau City Council. It is one of 30 CAYAD sites across New Zealand participating in a national programme that targets the use of illicit drugs amongst local youth.

CAYAD objectives

  • Increase informed community discussion and debate about issues related to illicit drugs
  • Adopt effective policies and practices to reduce harm
  • Increase local capacity to support young people in education, employment and recreation
  • Reduce supply of drugs to young people.

Key activities

  • Database of drug and alcohol services, social service agencies and youth orientated services
  • Establish and implement policy and practices to reduce harm within local Clendon/Manurewa sport clubs and/or schools
  • Advocate and provide input into policy development through submissions and/or recommendations to local and central government bodies
  • Establish and support working groups to develop community initiatives
  • Develop and implement initiatives that communicate messages which challenge the “norms” of drug use
  • Design and carry out research to develop best practice models that support broad based prevention/early intervention that can be disseminated for use
  • Brief intervention training, facilitation and/or presentations that impact systematic change when dealing with harm reduction issues
  • Collaborative projects or actions with or between agencies to improve harm minimisation skills for families.

Reports

A 40-page report, ‘Alcohol and Drug Policies and Practices - Research on Sports Clubs in New Zealand’, was launched by CAYAD at the 2011 Sport and Alcohol Conference.

A questionnaire was sent to 15 representative sports clubs, each identified as having made positive steps towards the reduction of alcohol and drug related harm.
