Community arts open day

When: 10am – 2pm, Saturday, 30 October
Where: Nathan Homestead, 70 Hill Road, Manurewa
Entry: Free with optional gold coin donations appreciated
Celebrate Nathan Homestead's 85th birthday and experience the vibrant arts community of Manukau in action. Activities include artist talks, free drama and art workshops and tutor demonstrations from painting to pottery. There will also be superb live music and performances by several artists including a 1920's Big Band and a Cook Island drums and ukelele group. Other highlights include local artist art displays, face-painting, lots of free fun children's activities and a special guest you don't want to miss!

Classes
Nathan Homestead has a busy calendar of arts and crafts classes on the go for adults and children (primary and secondary age) throughout the year. Classes are held during both daytime and early evening.

Nathan Homestead Performing Arts
Nathan Homestead Performing Arts provides a popular performance-based programme of dance and drama classes for children, teenagers and adults. Public performances are usually given at the end of the school term. Midday classes are also offered, specially tailored for students that are home-schooled.

School holiday programmes
Nathan Homestead holds a jam-packed schedule of arts, craft, sports and drama workshops, day trips and themed fun days for children and teens aged between 5 to 14 years old during each school holiday period.

OSCAR (Out of School Care and Recreation) programme
We believe that all children have a right to a happy, safe, warm and caring environment and acknowledge the importance of partnerships with parents/caregivers/guardians and families/whanau.
Our OSCAR Programme is aligned with the national OSCAR Foundation guidelines and is approved by Child, Youth and Family.
Hours of operat ion
Monday – Friday during school terms: 2.30pm – 6pm or part thereof.
Fees
Full week $70.00
Public holidays No charge
Un-notified absence additional $10.00 per child
Programme highlights
- Healthy afternoon tea
- Supervised homework time
- Regular excursions
- Variety of art, craft and recreational activities.
All children are collected from school by taxi and transported directly to Nathan Homestead. The taxi service for the programme is provided to children from the following schools only:
- Manurewa Central Primary School
- Randwick Park School
- St Annes Primary School
- The Gardens School
- Te Kura Akonga o Manurewa.

Weekend workshops
Weekend workshops for adults are led by guest art tutors and focus on specialist art topics such as photography, painting, sculpture and pottery.
FEATURED WORKSHOP
Combining watercolours and colour pencil drawing 2 day workshop with Brent McGuire
Saturday 18 September and Sunday 19 September 2010
9.30am - 3.30pm
$120 (includes both days)
Artist and tutor Brent McGuire has worked over a long period with both colour pencil and watercolour and by combining both has achieved stunning results and won an international award using this creative approach. This workshop provides an excellent insight into the techniques required to combine these two mediums successfully. Brent provides encouragement and motivation to inspire an individual's creative approach and draw out their inner creative potential. Brent won the Royal Horticultural Society Silver Medal in London in 2004.

Exhibitions
Monthly exhibitions by local, national and international artists are held throughout the year. A small display of local crafts, artworks and jewellery can be found for sale in the main foyer.

The Homestead
Historic building and grounds
The Homestead was built in 1925 and is situated on 9 acres of exquisite lawn and gardens. It has been kept in its original state and is a unique setting for all types of functions and occasions.
Venue and room hire
Seven rooms, in a variety of sizes, are available for meetings, small conferences, receptions, classes and training seminars. Basic conference equipment is available. The gardens and bush areas are an excellent outdoor venue for activities such as team building, group activities and a relaxing morning or afternoon tea on the lawn.
Community groups are welcome to hire the Homestead as a venue for their own programmes or meetings.
Wedding hire
Our walled garden and croquet lawn provide a perfect setting for outdoor weddings. The immaculately kept gardens provide a beautiful backdrop for a that special photo shoot. The Homestead is also an ideal place for the hosting of intimate wedding receptions.

Nathan Homestead Café is situated on the ground floor of the Homestead. Enjoy the taste of home baking with a cup of coffee or tea in front of the pleasant garden views.
