Mangere Mountain erupted approximately 18,000 years ago. It is one of the best preserved of Auckland's many volcanic cones.
Expansive views from its summit and ridges give us a sense of place. The mountain is a place for solitude, recreation and exploration. These features, and the unique character of Te Pane o Mataoho, make the mountain a treasure chest of learning for people of all ages.
Manukau City Council, the Department of Conservation, the Auckland Regional Council and Te-Wai-O-Hua signed an agreement enabling the establishment of the education centre in 1995. The Mangere Mountain Education Trust now runs the centre. Their aims are to:
- Undertake and facilitate the study of Mangere Mountain and its related environments. This includes the mountain's natural, historic and cultural values (both pre and post European settlement) and its spiritual significance to Tangata Whenua;
- Provide environmental and bicultural education programmes for the community about Mangere Mountain and its related environments
- Create educational resources relating to Mangere Mountain, and its related environments and make these available to teachers, students and other interested members of the public.
The centre is available for use by school groups for guided or self guided activities. Centre staff are also available for guided walks up Mangere Mountain. All education programmes offered at the centre are intended to be aligned with the school curriculum, and have strong bicultural and environmental education elements.
