What is hazardous waste?

Hazardous waste is any waste that is potentially dangerous to health or the environment, or can cause damage to property. This includes:

  • Explosives such as fireworks, ammunition and marine emergency flares
  • Flammable goods such as petrol, kerosene, oil and some types of paint
  • Corrosive items such as strongly acidic and caustic cleaning fluids
  • Chemically reactive waste such as pool chemicals
  • Toxic waste such as garden sprays, rat poison, solvents and various cleaners
  • Environmentally toxic items such as oil, paint and all batteries.

How can I dispose of household hazardous waste?

The HazMobile is a free service for householders who want to dispose of their unwanted hazardous materials safely and responsibly.

The service visits Manukau several times during the year to collect household and garden chemicals, waste oil, batteries and other products that can harm people or the environment.
