Privacy Act 1993

Manukau City Council is subject to the Privacy Act 1993 (New Zealand). The Privacy Act is supervised by the New Zealand Privacy Commissioner.

The Privacy Act 1993 contains twelve ‘Information Privacy Principles’ that govern the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information (i.e., information about an identifiable individual). The subject matter of each Information Privacy Principles is as follows:

Personal information is not collected on this Website, or associated Manukau City Council sites (such as Manukau Libraries), unless it is volunteered.

Effect of other laws

The Council has obligations under other laws, including the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (New Zealand), which makes official information held by local authorities more freely available, while protecting official information held by local authorities and the deliberations of local authorities to the extent consistent with the public interest and the preservation of personal privacy. Complaints about decisions made by local authorities on requests under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act can be made to the New Zealand Ombudsmen.

The undertakings given above in regard to privacy of personal information may be affected by council’s obligations under laws which require the council to make information available to the public.
