Proposed walking and cycling improvements to Chapel Road (Te Rakau Drive - Stancombe Road) and Smales Road (Chapel Road - Te Irirangi Drive)
Making local roads safer for our most vulnerable users is a priority for Manukau City Council. We are currently looking at ways to improve key sections of Chapel Road and Smales Road for all road users, but particularly pedestrians, cyclists and those with impaired mobility.
Chapel Road and Smales Road in Botany form important links on the planned Manukau Strategic Cycleway Network and connect with other cycle routes already implemented like on Stancombe Road in Flat Bush.
In addition to making Chapel Road and Smales Road safer for people who cycle, we also want to improve facilities for pedestrians and those with impaired mobility. Improving access to public transport is also part of this project.
Some preliminary feasibility investigations are now underway which include consideration of dedicated cycle facilities and the implications for on-street parking.
Once we receive the initial thoughts from the residents, owners and people who travel along this road, we will combine this with the engineering assessment to develop a draft plan.
We will get back to residents, owners and other interested parties with a draft plan later this year and ask for their comments on this plan at that time.
