The methods by which you promote your event will depend on its purpose, the likely target audience, the best ways to reach that audience, and your promotional resources, such as your budget.

Event websites

Adding your event to online event listings is a simple yet cost-effective way of reaching your audience.

You can list your event free of charge on several websites including:

Community newspaper listings

The majority of local Manukau newspapers offer free community noticeboard listings to non-profit groups as a way to advertise their events.

Media releases

How to get your story out there (PDF 307kb) is a guide to assist event organisers in writing media releases.

The guide also provides an up-to-date list of contacts for local media as well as a photographic consent form.

When writing a media release for your event, you should consider:

  • Timeliness - is your event taking place soon?
  • Prominence - is someone well-known performing at your event?
  • Relevance - does your event relate to a topic currently discussed in the media?
  • Proximity - is your event local or does it involve local residents?
  • Impact - does your event affect the readers of the publication?

Sponsors

While you help your sponsors by promoting them at your event, they can also assist in promoting your event.

Your sponsor(s) can promote your event:

  • On their website
  • In store by displaying flyers and posters
  • In newsletters and mailings.

Banners and billboards

Visual marketing using banners and billboards is a great way to promote your event.

Visual marketing ideas include:

  • Street-pole banners
  • Cross-street banners
  • Building-drop banners
  • Billboards (stationary and mobile)
  • Flexipole flags
  • Super banners.

If you have a community event sponsored, endorsed or supported by the council, please contact us for more information on visual marking opportunities.
