Wai Care

The Wai Care programme is a community and school based water quality monitoring restoration programme, supported by councils throughout the Auckland region.

The goals of the Wai Care programme are to assist groups to:

  • Learn about stream catchments and environmental issues
  • Plan a monitoring strategy for a local stream
  • Carry out tests for water quality and in-stream life
  • Interpret and understand information
  • Look at their own behaviour
  • Take action within the community to improve water quality.

Involvement, fun and keeping track

The aim is for communities to be involved in their local environment and to have fun by participating in learning about and helping to manage our streams and water catchments.

Together, we can improve our waterways and environment by reducing pollution sources, improving conditions for animal life in and around our streams by removing rubbish, fencing out stock, and planting stream banks. Activities include marking stormwater grates so that people know whatever goes down them drains straight into the stream.

Wai Care assists groups in riparian planting and providing walkways and facilities alongside major streams.

These groups plan for events and planting days that you, your family, friends or workmates may be interested in participating in.

The information from regular monitoring forms will be used to report on the state of our environment.

The council supports the following school and community based Wai Care Groups:

Manurewa

Mangere

Otara

Pakuranga

Papatoetoe

Businesses can also be part of Wai Care

The programme can help businesses practice good housekeeping in order to protect their local stream environments and to know their resource management responsibilities.

It is envisaged that other like-minded businesses can provide examples and support. Wai Care can put you in contact with other organisations and agencies that may be able to assist you in your business.
