Roading project.

A number of major projects to make it easier to get around and deal with growth in Manukau are at various stages.

Manukau rail link and station

The 2km new Manukau rail line will link Manukau city centre with the Southern Line at Puhinui. It is the first new rail route to be built in Auckland since the Eastern Line in 1930.

The station, which is due to open in 2011, will be a transport interchange allowing people to easily transfer between trains and buses. Find out more about the Manukau Station project here.

Manukau Harbour Crossing

Work on a new four lane bridge over the Manukau Harbour and widening State Highway 20 between Walmsley Road and Queenstown Road is expected to be complete in August.

The Manukau Harbour Crossing project is seven months ahead of schedule. When open it will add much needed capacity for motorists travelling across the Manukau Harbour. It has been designed to accommodate the 160,000 vehicles a day expected to use the new crossing by 2021.

The new bridge between Onehunga and Mangere Bridge is being built next to the original bridge, which opened in 1983. The bridges will each have four lanes and a bus lane.

The motorway between Walmsley Road and Queenstown Road will be widened to six lanes and bus shoulder lanes.

The project will also create new pedestrian and cyclist footbridges and a shared path stretching along the Waterfront Reserve in Mangere Bridge. Provision is being made under the bridges to allow for a future rail link to the airport.

The $230 million project is part of the planned western ring route which will provide alternative access around Auckland to State Highway 1.

Manukau motorway extension

This project will link State Highway One to State Highway 20 with a  4.5km motorway extension. Part of the planned Western Ring Route, it will take traffic off Wiri Station Rd and improve access to and from Auckland Airport.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) project is now in its final construction season and is on track to complete the motorway link by August 2010.

The project has involved the creation of a new flyover above the southern motorway and a tunnel underneath it to provide the link between SH1 and SH20. New bridges have been built on Great South Rd, Barrowcliffe Place, Wiri Station Rd, Lambie Drive, Plunket Ave and over the main trunk rail line.

There will be motorway interchanges at Lambie Drive and the western end of Cavendish Drive, which has been extended and widened by Manukau City Council to provide a direct link between the eastern suburbs, the new motorway and the airport.

The new motorway link will have two lanes in each direction and allow for a third lane to be added to each side in the future.
