Construction began in November 2009 on access to new burial areas being developed at Manukau Memorial Gardens.
Works include a bridge across the Waokauri Creek to link the eastern and western sections of the cemetery, supporting roads, street lighting and a new entranceway to the western block.
Designed by Aurecon, the bridge features two 3-metre wide traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways. The walkways will sit outside the arch structure which will provide a protective barrier for pedestrians.
The $3 million project is expected to be completed later this year (2010).
The existing eastern block is reaching full capacity and internal access is needed to ensure continuity of burial services.

Progress update, June 2010

Work is progressing well on Manukau Memorial Gardens’ bridge and roads project.
Recently contractors Downer EDI Works Limited used two large cranes to lift the major components of the tied steel arch bridge into place. The $3 million bridge and associated roads project will provide safe access to additional burial areas on the western boundary of the gardens and will be completed later this year.
