On licence.

An On Licence authorises the holder to sell and supply liquor on the premises or conveyance for consumption.

A BYO restaurant must hold an Endorsed On Licence.

As part of the transition to the new Auckland Council, some regulatory forms are being standardised. Prior to 1 November 2010 these forms can be used at any local government organisation in the Auckland area.


On licence requirements (premises)

  • The fee for an on-licence is $793.24. This is an application fee and is not refundable
  • The fee for a BYO on licence is $134.93. Manager's certificate is not required but someone must attend a course
  • The processing timeframe is 25 working days provided all the required information is included with the application
  • If you do not own the premise, the owner's consent must be included with the application
  • A plan of the premises must be included in the application
  • Two public notices must be placed in the newspaper once the application for the on-licence has been lodged with the District Licensing Agency and not before
  • Certified managers must be on the premises (except in the case of an Endorsed On Licence)
  • This licence is issued for one year initially then renewed on application, normally for three years.

Certificates of compliance (premises)

You must have the following certificates before applying for an On Licence:

  • Building Code Certificate: 
    - Deposit fee is $190
    - Takes approximately 10 working days 
    - Application must include plans showing layout of the premises and a site plan showing the premise in the group of shops.
  • Planning Certificate under the Resource Management Act 1991:
    - Deposit fee is $190 plus hourly charge out rates apply
    - Takes approximately 20 working days
    - Application must include all necessary information, plans showing the layout of the premises, and a site plan showing the premise if in a group of shops.

A conveyance is a boat, train, plane, bus etc.

  • If applicable, you must include the following with your application:
    - Safe Ship Management Certificate (sea vessels)
    - Airworthiness Certificate (airplanes)
    - Warrant of Fitness (vehicles).
  • Fee for on-licence is $793.24. This is an application fee and is not refundable
  • The processing timeframe is 25 working days 
  • If you don't own the conveyance, the owner's consent must be included with the application 
  • A layout plan of the conveyance must be included
  • Two public notices must be placed in the newspaper once the application for the on-licence has been lodged with the District Licensing Agency and not before
  • Certified managers must be on the conveyance 
  • This licence is issued for one year initially then renewed on application, normally for three years.
