Food premises grading.

A grade health pass.

Every food premise in Manukau must have a food grading certificate.

Food premises include:

  • Dairies
  • Petrol stations
  • Supermarkets
  • Bakeries
  • Restaurants and takeaways.

Each shop must display its food grading certificate so that it is visible to the public upon entering the premises.

Contact us to report a food premise for failing to display its food grading certificate.

How are food premises graded?

Manukau City Council's Environmental Health Officers are responsible for inspecting all food premises within the city. Inspections are done every 6 to12 months.

Premises are inspected against a list of criteria and given one of four grades A, B, D and E.

There is no ‘C’ grade as there is no “average” standard. Food premises have either above or below average hygiene standards.

A Grades Are given to premises that achieve a high level of compliance with the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974.
B Grades Are given to premises that achieve a moderate level of compliance with the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974.
D Grades Are given to premises that not achieve a satisfactory level of compliance with the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974, and/or have repeated faults from a previous inspection.
E Grades Are given to premises that have serious deficiencies in their level compliance with the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974.

Exemption from grading

If you visit a food business that is not displaying a grade certificate or Certificate of Registration it may be because they are exempt from the Food Hygiene Regulations. Most of the currently exempt premises in Manukau are large chain stores and factories.

Approval of a Food Safety Programme (FSP)  by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) will exempt a business from the requirements of the Food Hygiene Regulations 1974  as well as council registration and inspection.

In order to become exempt you must:
