Set up a home enterprise.

Moving towards a single council
The councils in the Auckland region have been working cooperatively to move smoothly to the new Auckland Council on 1 November 2010.

That cooperation has helped us standardise Resource consent online information and produce a single set of associated forms. You can use these forms now at any local government organisation in the Auckland area.

About setting up a home enterprise

Increasing numbers of people want to have the flexibility to work from home.

Establishing a home enterprise in residential or rural zones is a permitted activity under the District Plan, so does not require approval from council.

However, your activity must comply with a number of home enterprise rules. You may also need to apply for a building consent for the change of use of the affected buildings.

It is intended that a home enterprise be of a small scale only. If the business grows to a point where it does not meet the definition of a home enterprise, it should be relocated to an appropriate location in a business zone.

You will need to discuss your proposed home enterprise with the council.

Consents required

You may require a building consent depending on the scope of your project.
