Mana whenua - council relationships

Manukau City Council recognises the following tribal entities as Mana Whenua (those who are the original inhabitants and/or have ancestral origins in this area).

  • Te Akitai (Pukaki Marae)
  • Ngati Te Ata (Awaroa ki Manuka)
  • Te Ahiwaru (Makaurau Marae)
  • Ngati Paoa Whanau Trust Board
  • Ngai Tai Umupuia Te Waka Totara Trust.

Manukau Council recognises these groups as treaty partners and the guardianship role that they hold in Manukau as kaitiakitangi (guardians of the environment).

This relationship is demonstrated through, financial support for monthly meetings of the Mana Whenua Forum (which provides advice to council), and the involvement of their representatives as appointed members on Te Tiriti o Waitangi Committee.
